Book Writing – What Exactly to Write About

This article will attempt to answer the question: “What exactly to write about, where do you begin?” without having the benefit of knowing a single thing about what your area of expertise. The best advice is to:

Be an inch wide and a mile deep.

What does that mean? It means be as specific as possible, and spill your guts out on your area of expertise. Focus is on you and you give your reader something that they can take away with them. Beiong an inch wide and a mile deep helps you establish your expertise in the area.

Think about the questions that your clients may ask. Think about the questions, listen to the questions then answer them.

People will want to get the answers to their questions in your book.

There are lots of places to look for the questions that people are asking for in your area of expertise. Places like:

Your sent email folder. Surely you’ve answered someone’s question via email at some point in the past. You can pull information from there.

Write what people want you to write about. Write something that is marketable. Don’t spend your time writing a book about what you think people want to know, instead, write the book that people want you to write about.

That’s what you write about. You may determine that your audience needs a book that teaches them how to be a better sales person in six months so they can have the money to retire debt free and happy. What your audience wants however, is a book that will give them the skills to sell more widgets in less time so they can make more money and have better job security.
